Are supplements necessary and what should I look for?

I used to think that if I ate healthy enough I would be able to get all the vitamins and nutrients that I needed. Unfortunately I was wrong. Did you know that crops that were grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than what we eat today? A study was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition where they studied U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 for 43 different vegetables and fruits, finding “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C over the past half century.

Now this doesn’t mean we need to stop eating our vegetables and fruits. They still provide us the nutrients we need but this means we need more! We can improve our nutrient intake in several different ways and you should do all of these!

  1. Eating clean whole foods. Eliminate processed foods. Join our 30 Days to Healthy Living Program to learn how to make clean eating a way of life. Watch my 15 minute video about the program to learn more. Watch now
  2. Juicing is a great way to kick up your nutrition BUT you want to primarily juice vegetables not fruits since fruits have a high content of sugar.
  3. Taking supplements.

When you walk into your local market there are rows and rows of supplements, where do you start? Here are a few tips:

  1. First and most important, consult with your doctor and make sure you let your doctor know all the prescription medications and over the counter medications and supplements you are taking.
  2. I recommend seeking the help of a Functional Medicine Practitioner, a naturopath or a nutritionist, who will run some blood tests to really determine what you need.
  3. Before you take the supplement review the ingredients and know the possible side effects.
  4. Research the supplement. You should understand how the supplement has been studied.
  5. It’s best to purchase top quality supplements from a healthcare provider. Many supplements in the retail stores are not up to great standards since they are not strictly monitored.
